I’ve written previously about the zip download of the Azure Icons available from Microsoft. That download has .png, .svg, and some other formats of many different Icons for various products and services within Microsoft Azure. However, with the rate to change in the Azure ecosystem, that download becomes outdated very fast. Additionally, Microsoft doesn’t publish updates to that download very frequently.

There is a new tool from Matt LaGrandeur that helps you get the latest and greatest Azure icons by helping you scrape them from the Azure Portal itself. The tool from Matt is the “Azure Icon Downloader” which is an extension for Google Chrome. Simply install it and then you can navigate to the Azure Portal and the tool will surface the Azure icons on the page as easy to access .svg downloads!

You can download and install the Chrome extension here:

Azure Icon Downloader Chrome Extension 2

The way the Azure Icon Downloader extension works is that it does the work for you on scraping the .svg images from the page. You could always do this by viewing the HTML source of the page, copy the SVG source for the icon image, and then saving it locally. I’ve done this many times to be able to get an icon from the Azure Portal that was not yet available in the Azure icon download .zip file from Microsoft.

While this extension isn’t perfect, and even Matt says so in the about info for the extension, it’s still much easier than manually view source and doing all the steps yourself.

I know I’ll be using this extension to easily grab icons to use in PowerPoint slides, architecture diagrams with Visio, and other documentation where I need Azure icons.

Thanks Matt!
